Is The Great Tribulation God’s Wrath?

Should we accept the notion that the coming ‘great tribulation’ Jesus spoke of is the Wrath of God being poured out; or is this a concept out of sync with God’s Word?

The Great Tribulation the wrath of God/

by Paul Benson

The Great Tribulation

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:21

When Jesus was teaching on the end-time events which would precede his Return he spoke of a period of tremendous woe upon mankind. He described a coming time of war, famine, plague, natural disasters, great religious deception and persecution of the followers of Christ on a scale never seen before.

Many Bible teachers are claiming this time of great tribulation is actually the wrath of God being poured out upon mankind. And that because God has promised to ‘save us from the wrath to come’ the Church will be taken to Heaven before this woe begins. But where did anyone get the idea that when the Bible speaks about being saved from God’s wrath it is referring to the ‘great tribulation’? Is this a notion that is actually presented by the Scriptures? Let’s take a look.

Is Tribulation Wrath?

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,  1Thessalonians 5:9

… even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.  1Thessalonians 1:10

One of the most popular reasons given for supposing that the Church could not possibly go through this time is that the ‘Great Tribulation’ is the wrath of God; with one of the above verses of Scripture normally quoted as support for this line of thinking.

In the first verse we see wrath and salvation are presented as being diametrically opposed to each other: not WRATH but SALVATION. Now let’s ask ourselves: is ‘tribulation’ the opposite of salvation? No, it is not. I would say damnation is the opposite of salvation, wouldn’t you? Also, is tribulation synonymous with damnation? I don’t think we could properly say that either.

Neither of these verses in the context which they were given speak of being removed from the danger of tribulation in this world. In the second one Paul had just spoken to them of receiving the Word in much *affliction (1Thess 1:6). The word affliction there is translated from the Greek word ‘thlipsis’; the exact same word which is translated 18 times as ‘tribulation’ including ‘great tribulation’ in Matthew 24!

(*SIDE NOTE: Matthew gave us Jesus’ comment on the period of trouble as ‘ a tine of great tribulation’. How did Mark word it?

For in those days shall be affliction (Thlipsis), such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. Mark 13:19

This verse describes a day of affliction worse than the people of God had ever experienced or ever would. The Church was already in affliction (1Thess 1:6), just not yet the coming ‘great affliction’ (Thlipsis). Quite a leap to go from affliction to the vengeful wrath of God, don’t you think?)

Here is the listing in Strong’s Definitions for the Greek word from which we get the words tribulation and affliction in our Bible:

G2347 θλίψις thlipsis thlip’-sis

From G2346; pressure (literally or figuratively): – afflicted, (-tion), anguish, burdened, persecution, tribulation, trouble.

Total KJV occurrences: 45

There is nothing in this definition that points to the wrath of God. A word study on thlipsis and its usage in Scripture is very enlightening! It clearly shows we are not exempt from tribulation as believers, but rather called to endure it!

…and that we must through much tribulation (Thlipsis) enter into the kingdom of God. Acts 14:22

That no man should be moved by these afflictions (Thlipsis): for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto. 4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation (Thlipsis); even as it came to pass, and ye know. 1Thessalonians 3:3-4

Paul said that we are appointed to thlipsis and that we will suffer thlipsis! Let’s look once more at the words of Jesus in Matthew 24:

For then shall be great tribulation (Thlipsis), such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:21

As we shall see, the very words of Christ himself dismiss the notion the ‘great tribulation’ is the wrath of God! Sometimes I wonder if those who insist it is have ever really given this verse from Matthew a good looking over. Seriously! Whatever this ‘great tribulation’ is, the Lord Jesus said it will be the worst expression of it that ever has been or ever will be! Could this possibly be describing God’s wrath? Absolutely not! Please pause and ponder this:

1.) If the great tribulation WAS the wrath of God it would have to be worse than the wrath of God which destroyed the entire world in Noah’s day leaving only eight people alive. How could that be true? Where would the armies at Armageddon come from, or the wicked upon whom Jesus vents God’s wrath at his Return, if the great tribulation was God’s wrath worse than has ever been before?

2.) If it were God’s wrath it would have to exceed the wrath to be poured out at the Return of Christ:

…when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 2Thessalonians 1:7-9

The Second Coming of Christ is when the vials of God’s wrath are poured out (Revelation 15:1), This is the day God visits his wrath upon his enemies (not before). What events listed as occurring during the great tribulation are greater than the wrath of Christ’s Return? I sure don’t see any in the Bible, do you?

3.) Finally we must ask here: Is the great tribulation going to be worse than Hell, or the eternal Lake of Fire? Remember Jesus said: ‘such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Do you honestly believe that the events of the great tribulation, as fearsome as they might be, could ever compare to the wrath of God expressed by eternal damnation? Come on, let’s get real here. Let’s get this right!

I think maybe someone has deceitfully inserted a false definition into Jesus’ teaching on the great tribulation. Let’s insert Strong’s definition into it and see what that speaks:

For then shall be great tribulation (pressure, affliction, anguish, burden, persecution, tribulation, trouble) such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:21  Italics mine.

There is nothing in the definition of the word ‘thlipsis’ that has not always been common to true Christianity. The Body of Christ has been in tribulation for nearly 2000 years! Jesus was saying that at the end of this age would come a time when the tribulation (pressure, affliction, anguish, burden, persecution, tribulation, trouble) his followers will endure would be magnified to such an extent it would be like none ever seen before or ever will be. This was a heads-up warning, NOT a promise of exemption!

Satan’s Wrath

But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. Luke 21:23

Some folks point to this verse from Luke and say, “See, there is God’s wrath being poured out during the tribulation!” But is this passage referring to the wrath upon the Jews of A.D. 70; or maybe referring to the wrath of someone other than God during the great tribulation (or possibly both in a dual reference)?

… for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. … …17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 12:12-14+17

We see it is the wrath of the Devil coming down on these folks, and the place of refuge is to keep them from Satan’s wrath. Would God pour out his wrath upon them and at the same time make a place of refuge for them to be safe from him? How much sense does that make? None.

And notice God didn’t remove them from this planet to keep them safe. Also, if God made a place of refuge for the Jews to be safe during the great tribulation why couldn’t he do the same for us Christians? Why would we have to be taken out of this world; should we think God can preserve the Jews but not the Gentiles?

God’s Wrath Is AFTER The Tribulation!

And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. Revelation 15:1-2

Here, at the end of the great tribulation, we now see the Wrath of God; and as we see in Rev. 15 the vials these angels have contain this wrath. But nowhere can we find support for the notion the ‘great tribulation’ itself is his wrath. Notice that when this wrath is being prepared to be poured out heaven is filled with those who had gotten the victory over the Mark of the Beast. The battle of the Church with the Antichrist is past and now it’s time for payback!

The book of Revelation does speak of God’s wrath AFTER the Tribulation; but what takes place DURING that time are extremely serious Judgments along with a call to repentance. The wrath of God is not a call to repentance! Don’t let anyone deceive you into thinking you won’t be here because the time of great tribulation is in itself his wrath. The Bible teaches no such thing. That mistaken notion came from man.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT:  And what about the (supposed) tribulation Saints the rapture teachers speak of who are found to be on earth during this horrible time; has God appointed THEM unto wrath? Are they not the same blood bought children of God we are? Did not the Cross of Jesus deliver them from the wrath to come? Do the promises of God not apply to them? Is 1Thess 5:9 (God has not appointed us to wrath) no longer true; did it expire?

If one group of believers has to endure this time why not another? Is God going to remove the lukewarm Church of our generation, who have had such an abundance of light given them, before this tribulation; but make a new generation of baby Christians go through it unsupported by any seasoned elders, mature teachers, experienced prayer warriors, or the guidance of the Holy Ghost because they have all been given an exemption and left the planet? Gee, thanks God!

A Purified People

Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. Daniel 12:10

Although referring to the hardships of the ‘great tribulation’ as a means to chastise a lazy and lukewarm Church is a very unpopular concept (few even dare to raise the point for discussion) it is not without Scriptural support.

There are many passages in the Bible which seem to indicate a purification taking place during this time in regard to the Body of Christ. And who could deny this to be needful, considering the state the Church is in today? Is the Bride ready for the Groom? Not hardly; but nobody wants to face that issue; they just want their ‘rapture’!

The truths the Bible teaches about the last-days are being thrown aside to make room for the fables of escapism!

Those who say the great tribulation is the wrath of God are turning the truth into a lie. Jesus was NOT saying that before the Second Coming there would be a time of God’s Wrath like never before or ever will be. The notion is not even a possibility!

Let’s not be putting our faith in made-up fables, but in what is actually taught plainly in the Bible. The Word of God clearly teaches the wrath of God is brought upon the wicked at the Return of Jesus Christ to earth immediately after the great tribulation! (Matthew 24:29-31, 2Thess 1:7-10, Rev.11:18)

The Bible does NOT teach that the great tribulation is the wrath of God.

And neither should YOU! If you have been promoting this error you now know better, and had better stop it and repent; or you will stand before God as a deceiver. I hope you can now see the folly of believing the great tribulation is the wrath of God, and will cast that falsehood in the trash where it belongs.

May God by his grace and mercy lead us all into his perfect truth.

  1. Thank you Paul. Here is a question for preTribbers: if you did not bring a preTrib rapture framework to your reading of Scripture, what Bible passage would teach you of it? I think the answer is NONE.

    1. Hi FD;
      You are exactly on point!

Looking to the Scriptures for what info we are actually given on end-time events there IS NO MENTION of any of the basic ‘facts’ the Pre-trib hoax is founded upon. For example where is any mention of TWO comings of Christ in the end of days? NONE! Where is any mention of the Church instantly disappearing and leaving planet Earth (POOF! We are gone!) or any mention of a ‘translation’ off to Heaven? NONE! Any info that the wrath of God is poured out in the final years BEFORE Jesus himself in fact oversees the outpouring of wrath at the Second Coming? NONE!

Yes, there WILL be a catching-away to meet Jesus in the air at his Second Coming! BUT… Not only does the Bible not explicitly speak of a pre-trib rapture (as even most pre-trib teachers will honestly admit) it does NOT present the ‘Bible truths’ they claim IMPLY a pre-trib rapture! (Most folks don’t realize theologians who teach pre-trib say the Bible does not come right out and say there will be a rapture before the tribulation but that it is something understood by ‘implicit reference’. Meaning that certain passages seem to ‘imply it’.) But if you examine those passages they claim ‘imply’ a pre-trib timing to the resurrection/catching away they DO NOT give us the info they are claiming. They are seeing things that are not there.

The whole pre-trib fable is based upon people seeing things that are not there. It is nothing more than a doctrine founded upon a hallucination or a mirage!

Thanks for the visit and the comment.

  2. One error which most miss is in understanding what the Wrath of God is. Like the Day of the Lord.
We try to make it about ONE thing only, instead of noting what scripture says it is.
I agree with you that the Wrath of God is NOT the Great Tribulation, for that is the work of the enemy against His people.
We are presently undergoing Tribulation around the world, with thousands dying for their faith. However the Great Tribulation will be a distilled intense time of Tribulation for the Church.
The wrath of God though is NOT mainly about the Vial (or Bowl) judgements. Those are but a physical outpouring of His wrath in a limited and targeted way, for a short period of time. Instead His Wrath is mainly about being cast into Hell. This is why Wrath is diametrically opposite to Salvation. We are saved from His wrath. This does NOT speak of being on earth whilst the Vials are emptied, nor being saved from those Vials, but about eternity.
A second thing to note is that the Church IS on earth DURING the Vials.
Rev 16:10 -16  The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds.
The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.  And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.
(“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”)
And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

The 5th Vial is poured out on the throne of the beast and its kingdom and it is there were people gnaw their tongues in anguish. The Vials are aimed at those who took the Mark of the Beast.
The 6th Vial though highlights that Jesus has NOT YET come as a thief in the night. There is STILL a call to endure and not be naked. This is a call to endurance by the saints and information that Jesus has NOT come.
If the Rapture HAD happened then people would have SEEN Jesus, unless you try to argue for a Pre-Trib or perhaps Pre-Wrath explanation of His coming, which scripture does not support.
In the OT we have the shadow of these things in the events in Egypt where those of Israel are IN the Land of Egypt, but they are kept from the plagues which God sends. The Last Plague required an action by those of Israel, and those of Egypt who heeded such would also not lose their first born. These Vials are also called plagues as Rev 15:1 states.

When we recognise that there have been Days of the Lord (DotL) in the past, and that there are multiple Days of the Lord to come, for all a DotL means is that God sovereignly intervenes in a certain way and when we acknowledge that there will be multiple earthquakes and many signs in the sky THEN we can stop eisegetically understanding Revelation and instead take each part as clearly stated with connections made by it.
The Seals are ALL prior to the 70th week, and have been happening since Jesus started opening the scroll. The Trumpets also are not all part of the 70th Week, but only the 6th, which is slightly longer than 1260 days, and the 7th, which is around 42 months.
It is when we try to understand Revelation through a prior understanding, such as Pretrib or Prewrath and buy into their definitions and ideas rather than what scripture itself says first, we will jump to errors which are not supported by scripture.
I have put a few articles of my own up on uteftb.wordpress.com which consider these things.

    1. Hi Vakeros;
Only when one comes to the understanding that Jesus brings the Wrath of God WITH HIM AT THE SECOND COMING; and that wrath is part of the promised recompense upon those who have rejected his Gospel, will the confusion over what is and what is not God’s End Time Wrath be dispelled. Whatever takes place before that day (no matter how horrible it may seem) is part of his ‘call to repentance’ to the world in general (and those who confess his name in particular). God does not destroy those he is attempting to bring to repentance!

    2. I am currently studying Revelation, and have a few questions.

Why is the church of Philadelphia
told they will be kept “from the hour of trial” (not wrath, but trial) coming upon the whole earth?

Also, you stated “If one group of believers has to endure this time why not another?” Wouldn’t this question also apply to Christians going through the Tribulation period? Why do they have to go through The Great Tribulation, but not the Christians that preceded them?

I put together my thoughts on Revelation 3:10 in the following article. I think you may find some food for thought therein. Please let me know what you think of it.

      https://pbenson.me/2016/06/07/the-promise-of-revelation-3-10/

As to the second question: It would not be reasonable to consider why or why not people from days gone by didn’t experience what befell an evolving society in later years. I really don’t see that as something pertinent.

But to remove one group in the latter years but leave another to experience trials and tribulation the first group would not…. There I do see a deliberate discrimination or unfairness would be expressed. But it truly irrelevant because the Bible does NOT present that notion as something happening in the end-times. The whole ‘pre-trib escape’ is an invention of man!

  3. I am a truth seeker and I believe we have each been given the ability to understand scripture if we are saved and ask God for wisdom. I don’t understand how so many pastors can be deceived. However, Jesus warned us that deceit would be rampant and most of the pastors have been to seminary and let’s face it, seminary is a university and universities are well known for false teachings. We must trust God’s Words above all and filter everything else through it. We must also remember that through the years and translations, our Bibles have been westernized. Therefore, we must know the original Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic meanings of the words used and the context in which they are written. Thank you for sharing this. I will continue to pray and study and seek the truth.

I have been a post-tribber since 1974 when I met my first Calvinist who was a post-tribber. I was sure he was in trouble (I grew up in a Schofield Baptist church). I cried my eyes out to God for half an hour (didn’t take long) and He taught me a great lesson…My final statement to Him was, “I just want to know the Truth, no matter what.” And then I read the New Testament for my self and read the truth.

I always read the Bible that way, seeking the truth of HIS words, no one else’s. I also read things in context, within the chapter, the chapter before, and sometimes, the whole book. Love Micah. Very apropos for today…God Bless!

  7. Obviously you do not “wholeheartedly believe every word of the Scriptures.” Simply addressing two examples of this as I have shared with you via our numerous emails:
    – Jesus Himself clearly says the Church is NOT overcome (Matt. 16:18), and therefore the saints overcome by the antichrist in Rev. 13 are not the Church saints, but are Jews and Gentiles who come to Christ during the tribulation.
    – The epistles to the Thessalonians and the Revelation of Jesus Christ show that the remnant Church (as modeled by the church of Philadelphia, see 3:10) is seized/snatched up (the Greek is “harpazo”) to meet the Lord in the air before the tribulation, and returns with Him at His second coming to overthrow the antichrist and his followers.
Denying our (already crucified!) selves is essential to receive revelation of what the Scriptures have said all along. 😊

    2. The meeting with the Messiah, first the resurrected, then the church, does not happen until AFTER the anti-Messiah (trinity) is revealed as is explained in 1st and 2nd Thessalonians when Paul is talking about the resurrection. Never read 1st Thessalonians without reading 2nd Thessalonians. The Thessalonians were falsely told the resurrection had already occurred.

2 Thessalonians 2:2 Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, 2 that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. 5 Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things?

  8. Brother, of all your inaccuracies herein, the Holy Spirit leads me to answer just this one at this time:
“If the great tribulation was the wrath of God it would have to be worse than the wrath of God which destroyed the entire world in Noah’s day. Does that ring true? No it doesn’t…”

Well, here are some of Jesus’ words regarding the great tribulation: “For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now – and never to be equaled again.” (Matt. 24:21).

Yes, that means it will be worse than the wrath of God in Noah’s day.

    1. Deanna;
      Thank you for the comment.

I think maybe you did not think that statement through very well. You are suggesting the great tribulation will, in a manner worse than the day of Noah, destroy the entire world and kill off the entire human race, and more? Not possible.

The Scripture says Jesus will return in flaming fire taking vengeance on them who know not God and obey the Gospel. 2Thess 1:7-10 Is he going to take vengeance upon an empty planet? What about the battle of Armageddon? how could there be a battle if the world had been cleansed of all the wicked by the great tribulation. This is the kind of non-workable reasoning that is fostered by the error of Pre-trib / dispensational teaching.

The purpose of this post was to encourage one to study out the proper meaning and usage of the word tribulation in the Bible. There is nothing about the definition or biblical usage of the word tribulation that points us to the wrath of God, but instead to the persecution, affliction, burdens, and troubles endured by the Believers. This is what Jesus said would be worse that ever before during the final time.

I encourage you to read the post and your comment again.

    2. @deanna – you are right on. @Paul – you are so prideful and have such hubris, but seem to be quite misled. It seems like you read just a couple of lines, and then came to your own conclusions (eisegesis) as opposed to reading ALL of the relevant scripture (Daniel, Thess., Rev., etc) and then draw your conclusions from the Word (exegesis). When you put it all together, there is a clear and compelling case for a pre-tribulation harpazo/rapture. There are many, many reasons for this.

You say “God’s wrath” is the primary reason but I would argue the “no man knows the hour or day” is the biggest reason. The Tribulation is going to have a distinct start. If that is the case, then the “hour and the day” CAN be calculated and known – which would be a conflict. Any rapture cannot be mid or post tribulation, because it could and would be calculated by the Bride of Christ. I hope that helps – and please dig back into the Word, brother.

    3. Hi Anonymous;
Thanks for the comment; but I am afraid it is just more ‘pre-trib proof that is no proof at all’!
I have fully answered and refuted this erroneous claim of being able to calculate that day of the Second Coming by using the biblical narrative that gives us info on the reign of Antichrist in the following article. Please give it a prayerful consideration:

      https://pbenson.me/2017/01/25/debunking-known-versus-unknown-day-myth/

In summery: the day of the Second Coming CANNOT coincide with the exact day of the end of Antichrist’s reign (and his destruction); but it will unexpectedly occur somewhat BEFORE his demise for reasons clearly outlined in the article.

BTW the catch-phrase ‘No man knows the day or hour’ is what I call a ‘Stolen Snippet’! It has been hijacked from a context discussing THE SECOND COMING and misapplied to supposedly be speaking of a -pre-trib rapture’. The text clearly is speaking of Christ’s Return to Earth NOT some previous event as many (including you!) are falsely claiming. Here is a 2 part video where I expose the ‘stolen snippets’:
