There have always been off-shoots of Christian ministry which become prominent for a season, although whether that season be long or short varies greatly. And though most of these off-shoots begin with a foundation of biblical principles, many fail to retain a Bible based focus or a Bible based message; and thereby become a danger to the Body of Christ.
We are not all the same, nor are we all endowed with the identical calling. Paul taught there are differences of giftings and differences in the administration of those giftings. I myself spend a great deal of time countering false teachings, and have a definite strong focus in that area. But I sense a divine mandate from the Lord to keep the overall focus on Christ and the work of his Cross. This focus is vital to the well-being of any ministry.
A healthy ministry or fellowship presents a full and balanced representation of the Gospel of Christ in ministering to the needs of the Church and to the lost. When we lose sight of Christ’s redemptive sacrifice, and the wondrous victory it brings, many a falsehood can appear to be a divine answer to the ills of mankind. And when a certain aspect of ministry becomes an island unto itself we should be extremely wary of misguided practices or teaching being promoted. Into this category falls much of what is today being called ‘Inner Healing’ or ‘Deliverance’ ministry.
Is Deliverance Ministry Biblical?
Yes, deliverance ministry is absolutely biblical. We clearly see that Christ cast out devils, and healed people of satanic oppression during his time of ministering and teaching here on Earth. And in his commission to his followers he ordained that deliverance be a part of their ministering also.
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mark 16:15-18
These words of Christ are some of the most hotly contested words of Scripture. Many reject this passage in Mark as an unreliable ‘addition’ to the Word of God. Most Bibles carry some kind of deceitful footnote or commentary attacking the credibility of this passage; and many of the altered and corrupted new versions do not even contain these words. They have actually been edited from the text (along with many other verses)!
But the truth to the matter is found in the overwhelming manuscript evidence which the promoters of Textual Criticism (a fruit of the Pride of Scholarship) like to remain silent on. Of the 620 existing manuscripts (whole or partial) which contain the 16th chapter of Mark, 618 of them contain the words of Christ quoted above and only *two do not. That’s 618 to 2! (Anybody hearing those crickets?)
{*And do you know which two do not contain those words? The corrupted and altered Sinaiticus and Vaticanus manuscripts which are the foundation for the Westcott and Hort Greek Text (the horribly tainted Greek text from which all modern Bible versions are either translated from, or greatly influenced by). There is a reason the modern Bible versions read so differently than the KJV. They come from an altered text source! I have two free books showing the changes to the modern Bible versions, how these changes are affecting the beliefs of the Body of Christ, and also where these changes came from. They are available for free download here.}
So we see that true deliverance ministry is totally Biblical. The problem comes when people fall away from the pattern (and power source) the Bible expresses. When ministries employ tactics out of sync with the way of victory God has ordained precious souls are misled and injured. And so very many have done exactly that.
I want to present the serious problems, and dangers, associated with many of today’s deliverance ministries in a ‘nutshell’ concept you can easily digest and comprehend. But first lets look at the Bible way to be set free, from not only the sins of our past, but also the hurts and tormenting memories many needlessly suffer under.
God Is A Killer And He Wants You Dead!
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2Corinthians 5:17
God’s ways are not our ways! There are without a doubt many apparent paradoxes presented in the teachings of the Scriptures. For example: the exhortation that we should ‘labor to enter into rest’ (Hebrews 4:11). One of the greatest paradoxes of our faith is that God brings us life by putting us to death. The old man dies, and a new man comes forth through faith in the work of propitiation expressed in Christ’s death upon the Cross.
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4
It is faith in the Blood he shed, and our personal identification with his death, burial, and resurrection that brings the healing and life-giving power of Christ’s Spirit to us. And not only to us but also IN us! We become the dwelling place of the Most High! Our salvation, regeneration, deliverance, and all aspects of healing are a product of God’s indwelling grace through our faith in the work of the Cross.
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
Forgetting those things which are behind! Oh how I take comfort in those words! (With a past like mine who wouldn’t?) This journey of faith is absolutely one of forward progress; and we have a multiplied witness in the Word that we are NOT to be looking back upon the past; but pressing forward in a quest for personal growth and the renewal of our minds. This growth and renewal comes from us feeding off of, and submitting to, the truth as revealed to us by the Word of God and his Holy Spirit.
The Shameful Folly Of Resurrecting The Old Man
I promised to present the problem with much of today’s deliverance ministry in a nutshell; and this headline does just that! The grave danger presented by much of what calls itself Inner-Healing or Deliverance ministry revolves around the practice of resurrecting the old man (some say inner-child) to heal his wounds. But this is not in line with the pattern of ministry we see in the Scriptures!
Measures ranging from Psychology, Psychiatry, hypnotism, memory regression, role playing, and even in some extreme cases shock therapy, are employed to bring a person back to the point they suffered injury or oppression. The resulting experiences these poor folk go through is heartbreaking. Many spend years re-living the painful traumas of their past over and over again seeking to be set free from them.
For a Christian this is especially dangerous as it nullifies your identification as a new and free person in Christ, and returns you to your former state of mind. This setting aside of our focus on the Cross, and instead looking to other means of healing, is a very unwise practice. The danger involved, and the potential for damage to a person’s faith, can not be overstated! This not only disregards the work of the Cross (while often claiming to promote it!), but also opens up the person to the influences of the same dark powers (and condemnations / guilty feelings) which had dominion over them previously!
What good could come of returning to a time and state of mind where you were not under the Blood of Jesus? Why people think that re-living the past is going to somehow heal you of it is beyond me! Again, God’s ways are not our ways, and in this case our ways are certainly NOT God’s ways!
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. Matthew 12:43-45
One thing most people never hear of is the MANY horrendous ‘failed cases’ deliverance ministries all know of, but are quite shy to discuss. I believe this happens because these poor folk open up to darkness and get overtaken. The evidence of this, easily researched and verified on the internet, is too widespread to deny. I have researched this myself; and it is not hyperbole, but solid fact!
Many people who receive unbiblical methods of ministry such as hypnotism or memory regression therapy (or ministry from those who have no true anointing from God) actually get much worse, even to the point of suicide, or of some others needing to be institutionalized! When people are opened up to devilish forces without proper protection they often pay a severe price. As Jesus stated their last state is worse than their first!
Beware of ANY ministry or therapy which seeks to heal you by taking you back into your past memories and injuries! It is not of God! You do NOT need to re-live those events to be healed of them and you do NOT need to re-experience them to find the strength to forgive. The Cross is the answer to all of it.
No! Not The Cross! Anything But The Cross!
For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1Corinthians 1:17-18
The wisdom of man and the tactics of Satan will make the Cross of Christ of no effect; and leave the suffering masses suffering still. It is only when we give Christ’s sacrifice on that tree the proper regard, and preach that message like we believe it, that the Church (and the lost of this world) will receive the deliverance they desperately need. We need to join Paul in boldly declaring it to be the power of God!
PLEASE get this! Any method of therapy or ministry that seeks to resurrect the old you in any fashion, and does not preach the power of the Cross as the only means of healing a broken spirit, is NOT from God! And should be avoided like it is the Devil in disguise; because it is! No matter how well meaning they may be; anyone who is not preaching a message that kills off the old man at Calvary, and brings forth a new man healed by the power of Christ’s Cross, his Blood, and his holy Name, is a deceived person being used of the Devil.
We need to pray for, and wisely exercise, great discernment in this age of great deception. The Devil has a way of dancing around the Cross, seeming to promote it, while all the time really denying it! He hates the Cross, and the victory it brings; and will promote ANY pseudo-Christian practices that seem to be spiritual, but in reality do not preach the message of deliverance through faith in what Jesus accomplished that day.
If someone has the power to cast out devils and heal oppressed minds by the name of Jesus and the finger of God: AMEN to that! And if someone has the anointing of God to preach a word of deliverance that will set the captive free: AMEN to that also. Let ‘er rip! There is victory over all the power of the evil one in the true Gospel of Christ when it is preached the way it ought to be preached. But to go to any other source for healing is outright foolish!
PERSONAL SIDE-NOTE; I am not insensitive to the pain or confusion others have experienced due to the mistreatment they suffered at the hands of others. Or the nightmare many live through on a daily basis. Or the struggle with unforgiveness and bitterness many face. But the answer to it all is found in the Cross of Jesus Christ. I rarely speak of it because it is so personal; but I myself suffered some of these very things. As a child I was subjected to gross perverseness and even cruelty. Oh Paul, how horrible! How do you deal with it? Actually, I don’t! I rarely think of it, and don’t even consider it anything that any longer needs to be dealt with. Why should I? That person who received that abuse is DEAD! He doesn’t need healed; he needs to just stay dead and left behind! Would you agonize each and every day over the injury to a child that happened 500 years ago? Of course not. What would be the point. That child has been gone for a long time, and is no longer suffering. Why fuss over his wounds? My old man died 2,000 years ago on a hill called Golgatha! He was crucified with Christ! I have no intention of taking him down off that Cross and reviving him to heal his inner child! I am more than satisfied with the results of being a new creation in Christ. I AM FREE!
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Colossians 2:12
We begin our journey at the Cross, and then we pick it up and carry it with us (a symbolism of the death of the old man). The victory we have as believers is not a healing or up-grade to the old man, but is found in realizing we are a new creation in Christ!
Come on folks! Let’s get this one right! The Scripture tells us to FORGET those things which are behind, not to remember them over and over! We need to put our faith in the operation (power) of God; and not the wisdom of men, nor the madness of their methods. Period.
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1Peter 5:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2Timothy 1:7
If you have suffered under abuse or oppression I am truly sorry for your pain; and I do understand some of what you are going through. But whether it be Psychology, Psychiatry, or (supposed) Christian deliverance ministry utilizing the methods of man, all will at best only heal you slightly, or worse let you down completely. You will find all the help you need in the power of an old rugged Cross.
The sacrifice that took place there, and the victory won on your behalf, have the power to heal the heart, soul, mind, and body in a thorough fashion.
My advice: if you need inner-healing see a Divine Specialist! Why go anywhere else?

Thank you for visiting my site.
This is an old post but thank you for sharing. I have an extremely severe case of PTSD and have sought every form of trauma therapy and healing out there. I have been through several rounds of deliverance and inner healing out of sheer desperation. I was never healed and got worse and worse. I felt like I was constantly oppressed by demons. I would get sick and have horrific flashbacks reliving the trauma. Then get blamed for not forgiving enough. Also Jesus never showed up in my memories like they insisted he would. So I suffered even more because I felt Jesus didn’t love me enough to heal my memories. I would at home beg God to heal me without making me go back to memories that were full of evil and terror. God led me to learn of his grace and forgiveness and told me I was a new creation and that the inner children did not need healing because they died with him and I was raised to new life. I repented of the inner healing and am hopeful for a new life. The inner healing ministry is almost identical to secular trauma therapy. And it requires you to forgive what Jesus already forgave and puts heavy burdens on suffering people. For me the experience was years of constant demonic torment which led to self injury and suicidal thoughts. It almost killed me. It also made me terrified of God. What a relief to find out he already healed me and destroyed the works of Satan done against me. Thank you for writing this post.

Hi Jenny;
I am so glad to hear folks have found the article useful. SO many people don’t understand that to ignore the truth we are new creations in Christ is to deny what was accomplished on the Cross on our behalf. And it is tragic the way people are damaged by resurrecting the ‘old man’ and re-living the trauma they endured.
The unbiblical practice of ‘inner-healing’ often opens the door to demonic activity and has made ship-wreck of many people’s faith. It is VERY dangerous; no Christian should have anything to do with it!

Hey, just wondering your thoughts on programs like Celebrate Recovery and other 12 step programs based on Christian principles? Would you classify them as inner healing or suggest them at all?

Hi Scott;
The main concern I have with ANY such ‘help group’ deals with the question: Do they promote the life-changing power of the message of the Cross of Christ (ie. a Christian becomes a ‘new person’ in Christ) or are they promoting a concept that ‘strengthens and supports’ you in as you continue on in life as the same old sinner with the same old bondages that you have always had?
2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
The true message of the Cross is a message of VICTORY OVER SIN! Not just over the consequences of sin; but also over the power of sin. Are they preaching a message that says you are ‘just a sinner saved by grace’ (if they are preaching at all) or are they preaching a message that declares that in Christ we are a new creation and MORE THAN CONQUERORS? (Romans 8:37)

Hi Deemari101;
In this day of great deception (and even delusion) so widespread among the Body of Christ we ALL would like a solid and secure ‘go to’ for divine council. I am a big believer in submitting to the wisdom of seasoned elders (especially when it is multiple elders working together) but not everyone has that safety net. And we must always understand that ALL christian workers are human and subject to limitations; and also the possibility of themselves having been taught faulty doctrines. The best advice I can give you is to go to God directly and not count upon the words of men.
When pondering your question the passage that came to me was this:
1Ti_2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
Since our Lord Jesus has taken upon himself the role of our great High-priest and Intercessor I think the most sure course we can set is to thrown ourselves before him in earnest prayer for our needs; and always approach God with a confidence in his spoken promises. Quoting the promises of the Word of God while petitioning him for your needs is not only a faith builder but shows God you are truly moving in faith in his promise of provision.
Jas_4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Blessings t you;

Hello Valerie;
I do hope you find the victory in Jesus that you so badly need. The main encouragement I can offer you is to please understand the way ‘inner healing’ techniques steer people AWAY FROM the true power of the Gospel, and instead lead you into ineffective methods that can actually open the door to Satanic oppression (or worse).
The true power of deliverance found in the Gospel of our Lord is THE POWER OF THE CROSS!
What Jesus accomplished by shedding his Blood and suffering unto death on that Cross is quite often set aside or marginalized in most of what is called ‘inner healing’. Our former self (or inner child as some call it) does not need healed – it needs to be put to death so to speak. I am not talking about a death to our physical bodies; but about our old self literally disappearing, and a new self (with a renewed mind and spirit) coming forth, through identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. When we come to true faith in Christ and his Cross we become a new creation. The person we were before is to pass away when we are born-again and be replaced with a life born from above.
The grave danger of ‘inner healing’ ministry is the reviving of the ‘old man’ instead of ministering life and faith to the ‘new man’ we become through our faith in Christ and the power of his shed blood. Renounce all association with the phony tactics of ‘inner healing’ and confess your new birth, new life, and renewed mind we are promised in Christ.
The food that the ‘new man’ grows and thrives on is the Word of God and the presence of God’s Holy Spirit. A consistent diet of Bible study (please avoid the corrupt modern versions) and earnest prayer will edify you and lift you out of depression; whereas the bogus methods of man only minister bondage. Place your focus upon the Cross and what was done; and upon all the places God’s Word give us promise of a new heart and a renewal of the mind. Recite those promises to God (remind him of them) in your prayers, and verbalize them to others (testify to God’s ability) in your life.
Rev_12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
You are in my prayers dear sister; and I trust others who read these words will also intercede on your behalf.

Hi Paul. Thank you for writing this. I am a new believer in the middle of sorting out where I stand in regards to “Christian inner healing” methods, and I found your perspective here very helpful. Also a bit disappointed to be swayed in this direction because it does seem to be the slower path, and obviously part of me wants the quicker fix, but what can you do… the truth is the important thing here, obviously. I am wondering if you could elaborate on what you meant by “A consecration in our personal life and also our prayer life”? What does this mean/look like?

Hi Joshua;
To put it simply I guess I was talking about ‘getting serious about being serious’ when it comes to the things of God and our personal relationship with him. So much of what I see promoted as Christianity today is so frivolous and void of any substance that it really makes me wonder how many are truly in touch with God in their lives or thee religion.
Where is the fear of God in this modern generation of believers? Where is the warning of the danger of lingering in sin and lukewarmness that should be sounding from every pulpit in this nation (considering the current state of the Western Church)>

Good day to you. May I please ask your advice?
I am going along a similar path of pursuing a healing ministry, and I am still in my learning and research phase. I agree with what you are saying above, but how exactly is it done physically? What do you say/do/pray etc for healing and /or deliverance? I know we must follow the bible but as far as I know, it doesn’t show you precisely how to physically go about it, there is no step by step ‘guideline’ so to speak.
Many thanks for your time.

Hi Jenna-Lee;
Personally I feel it is less important what exact words or structure/pattern you use than it is what spirit or authority you are speaking in. Pray to God in intercession for others in the authority of Christ’s name and his call upon your life; and speak to the forces of darkness in that same authority. But before we can minister on behalf of Christ we must be sure we are abiding steadfast in his will and his leading. A consecration in our personal life and also our prayer life is a MUST.
I think the best advice on how to minister deliverance would be to study the book of acts and learn form the works of the Apostles. I would be very wary of the practices we see commonly employed by many today.
Also, moving in compassion and a heart-burden for the needs of others will accomplish much more than enormous efforts at fulfilling either activities of religious duty or personal goals. I once heard a story of two missionaries who had labored fruitlessly for years to the point of exhaustion and discouragement. They wrote to a well known revivalist for advice and said:’We have tried every thing and cannot find fruitful results; what are we to do?’ He wrote back to them only two words: ‘TRY TEARS!’
Blessings to you; and may you find much fruitfulness in your labors together with our Christ;

I followed the teachings & practiced the methods of inner healing for 3 years. It took me that long to realize that it was a deception. Inner healing messed up my mind & I ended up in a mental health facility. I had developed false memories & became obsessed with my past. I then forgot who I was in Christ. Inner healing is a false teaching from hell & I warn everyone to stay away from it.

Hi Daniel;
So glad you got woken up to the danger of that nonsense. Your testimony epitomizes the danger I warn of. To revive the old man (so the inner-child can be healed) is to deny what was accomplished on the Cross; and as you said it will lead to forgetting who we are in Christ. The repercussions can be very tragic when we loose touch with the grace/strength the new man receives by a confidence that the Cross has put to death the old man.

Hello. What are your thoughts of breaking generational curses? Particularly in the area of infirmities. Thank you.
LikeLike
Hi Tami;
What is being taught on generational curses (like most false teachings) is a mixture of truth and error. And it is hard to minister against that error without sounding like you are refuting or dismissing the truths used as a vehicle to carry along the false concepts and practices. The Word of God and the teachings of Christ and his Apostles must always be our standard of ministry. We do not need to embellish upon what was established by the Father as ministry.
I do not see the Apostles teaching on getting set free from ‘generational curses’ by this method or that. They taught that sin brought the curse upon us through the strength of the LAW. In Christ and through the power of his Cross we are free from the curse of the Law! ANY CURSE!
Great wisdom can be applied by shying away from any teachings or practices that do not point to the Cross and the Blood of Jesus as the victory over any such thing as curses, infirmities, or ‘inner wounds’. Many are promoting methods that actually steer us away from that true source of victory and into bondage (all in the guise of deliverance ministry). Always ask: Did the Apostles utilize or promote these teachings or practices? That should be a standard of Christian ministry; but so many are intent on obtaining popularity or status by coming up with new ‘revelations’ that the Bible method of ministry is sadly being set aside. And also many seek to exert power over others by making them think they are reliant upon their ‘deliverance’ abilities. That is another form of bondage that many are under. And these hucksters are fleecing the flock out of millions of dollars with their sorceries! BEWARE!
Let’s stick to the Bible and do things God’s way!
Blessings to you Tami;

There are about as many methods to inner healing and deliverance as there are denominations. Some are darn right weird and others completely normal and Bible based. As far as I know the only time where repressed memories occur is DID and those must be dealt with by the cross, blood, and resurrection. It’s hard to get around it.

Thinking of how many need to FORGIVE those who hurt them in the past. Feelings of bitterness destroy our ability to follow the lead of Holy Spirit with joyfulness. What should happen to those who did wrong, well, that’s a GOD problem!
Remember, people are attracted to the LIGHT you give off without even saying a word. The lost and confused sense you can guide them. I remember having strangers ask me for directions all the time when I was in New York City, even when I myself was figuring out where I was! We have many moments to help as we pass through the crowd. Three decades ago I did techniques in John Bradshaw’s book, Homecoming: Reclaiming and Healing Your Inner Child which promises readers a ‘safe’ way to nurture old wounds. While reborn, I was immature in the Lord failing to grasp the potential for harm and the book’s appeal to the flesh (quick fix). Despite the author’s sincerity, nightmares 2-3 years in the rearview returned. The Lord Jesus Christ alone is Wonderful Counselor and He can restore, heal, and equip to forgive the abuser. Wholeness comes only from submitting to God’s headship and accepting all the ‘why’ questions are already answered in Ephesians 6:12. Truly all the answers are in the bible, but we must trust Christ’s sufficiency, remain focused on Him while embracing our utter dependence on Him. Thank you for addressing this far too many wounded people fall prey to false teachers only to be spiritually wounded.

A simple scriptural faith and life is not enough; the Bible is not enough. Verses are used piecemeal to back it up. If you don’t go along with them, you are made to feel stodgy and resistant to God’ moving. I wonder, how did victorious Believers in centuries past ever make it without these new methods?? Ginny
