When Darkness Shines…

angel of light

by Paul Benson

Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. -Jesus Christ

When I repented and turned to embrace faith in Jesus in 1980, and began to fellowship with the Christian community, I was utterly overwhelmed at the contrast between the gross darkness I had been delivered from and the ‘marvelous light’ that was now shining upon my life.

It seemed Heaven was shining upon me from all directions!

But now, nearly forty years later, I look back on those days with the realization that not all that then appeared to be light was actually light from above. Much of it was in fact an evil and Antichrist spirit feigning itself to be God manifesting his divine glory and Truth!

Much of what I had thought was divine glory lighting my path was actually the enemy of my soul seeking to replace the truth of God’s Word with the defilement of lies and mixture; and thereby destroy my union with God! And I see now that Satan had hid his destructive actions against me behind a lively façade of religious glory – a false glory that imitates the true glory of God.

There is a light that illuminates, and there is also a light that blinds!

There is the light of truth that reveals God and his glorious Kingdom as they truly are. And there is a false light that hides them behind a fog of deceit and delusion; a spiritual darkness that masquerades as light making promises of safety and salvation that it has no power to deliver.

Those who follow this darkness that shines with a false light, instead of embracing a love for the Truth that saves,  will not find the safe haven they had hoped for!

The Scriptures of the New Testament are absolutely replete with warnings of following this false light; but it seems as the days pass on and on that clarion warning is heeded less and less. And thus the mainstream of today’s professing believers stray farther and farther away from the light of Truth and into the darkness that shines with a false glory.

What will it take to get the Church of God to awake to her condition, and get back on her true course? Those who follow my writings know I believe this to be one of the main purposes of the coming time of great tribulation. A time of sifting, and a purifying purge, before the Return of our Christ. Deep dealings that will return the true Church to the true faith (and practices) once delivered to the Saints (Jude 1:3).

Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. Daniel 12:10

Many WILL be purified by the events to come. But, just as a goldsmith does not subject previously purified gold to the fires of purification (there is no need to as it has already been separated from its impurities and is now fit for use), in like manner God does not purge us unnecessarily.

And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.  Daniel 11:32

Those who have already judged themselves, hungered after true righteousness, and submitted to God’s dealings, will find themselves in service to their King in the coming tribulation. And what a time of glory (in the midst of much persecution) the Bride will see! … the glory of the latter house shall be greater than the former. (Haggai 2:9)

But, sadly, many others will find themselves being purged in a manner they could never have imagined (facing choices the had been deceptively told they would never have to face). Which company will you be found in when those days of darkness soon unfold? Those being used greatly by God, or those being chastised and purified?

Once again the Lord is prompting me to encourage his people to prepare themselves for what lays ahead. And not just by purging ourselves of sinful tenancies, or entanglements with this world (quite crucial, as without holiness no man shall see God. Hebrews 12:14), but by also having a heart to do things in *God’s ways and in his timing.

*{One of the ways we gain discernment of God’s ways is by weeding out that which is not God at work. And great discernment concerning the wiles of the Devil comes from a proper understanding that the word Antichrist means not only against Christ but also instead of Christ. We need to comprehend that whatever the false light of the Antichrist spirit manifests to not only oppose the true work of Christ but to REPLACE IT is in itself also Antichrist!

When the ways of Satan, working through his influence over mankind (whether they be saved or lost), replace the ways of God this is the Antichrist spirit at work! When the teachings of man replace the teachings of Christ, and the truths of God’s Word, this also is the Antichrist spirit at work through men. People sometimes wonder why I concentrate so much on speaking out so soundly on issues like the pre-trib rapture or false concepts of grace. These falsehoods are Antichrist! They are replacements for the truth spawned by the Antichrist spirit at work in the hearts and minds of man!}

If we are so foolish as to think the Western Church is even remotely in sync with the mind of Christ, or is following the example of lifestyle and ministry Jesus and his Apostles gave, we are among those who have been blinded by that light that is no light at all.

If we are going to be used of God in the days ahead we need to get in step with his will and his ways! We desperately need to return to the pattern given us!

God Gives Us Patterns To Follow

Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. Hebrews 8:5

When God separated his people out from among the rest of the world, and chose them to be his own, he gave Moses very strict instruction as to how he wanted things done. He gave them concise patterns to follow that would guide them to do the will of God in all their ways. And he demanded that these patterns be followed. It was not an option!

Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat, 12 And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the LORD, and of all the chambers round about, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things: 13 Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD…. …19 All this, said David, the LORD made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern. 1Chronicles 28:11-13+19

David received from the mouth of the Lord concise instruction as to the construction of the Temple and all the service that was to be conducted there. God wanted it done HIS way in order to accomplish HIS purposes. (I wonder whose purposes are accomplished when we do things man’s way?) Whether we understand it or not the Temple and all the divinely mandated service that took place therein were a type and shadow of the Body of Christ and our call to priesthood.

There is a Divine Pattern we are to follow to accomplish God’s purposes in this age as well. If we truly want to see God’s will accomplished in our lives we have to find and follow that pattern! The Word of God contains that pattern!

And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matthew 4:19

In the Bible we have record of nearly twenty times Jesus told his disciples to ‘follow him’. You follow someone by walking in his footsteps. A simple truth; but one that seems to have fallen by the wayside in the modern church.

Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 1Timothy 1:16

The Apostles of Christ taught the early believers that they were to follow the pattern shown forth by the Savior. This was to be the pattern, not just for the believers of that age, but for ALL ‘which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting’! And the Apostles led the way by following his example themselves.

For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;… … 9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us. 2Thessalonians 3:7+9

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 2Timothy 2:2

And those disciples of Christ, who so diligently followed the example he gave, and clung to his teachings as the very words of life, fully expected the generations of believers to come would do likewise. And we so clearly see this example being adhered to in the Scriptures:

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. Acts 2:42

God has very graciously given us MUCH instruction in how we are to live and function as the Body of Christ. That pattern is found in the teachings of Christ and his Apostles; and the example of lifestyle and ministry they gave us. But today, as a modern and (supposedly highly enlightened) Church, we have very foolishly departed from the divine pattern given! I think it’s time we ask ourselves: Just how far have we strayed from that trail blazed by Jesus and his Apostles?

DO we embrace the separated lifestyle they exemplified? DO we embrace the true doctrines of the faith the way they taught them? DO we conduct our assemblies (and ministry) according to the pattern and instruction they so plainly laid out in their writings?

A Separated Life?

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Hebrews 12:14

In the vast majority of churches today you are called legalistic if you lift up a biblical standard of holiness and separated living. Repentance is treated like a four-letter-word; and those who preach repentance are mocked and ridiculed.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2Corinthians 5:17

Preaching on the divine power of grace to change and sanctify a heart has been replaced with an anemic sin-pacifying description of grace as a mere whitewash that makes the unrepentant comfortable in their defilement. But regardless, the Word of God bears witness that those who serve sin are not servants of Christ!

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Romans 6:12-16

Do We Truly Follow Biblical Doctrine?

The teachings of Christ and his Apostles, as far as the foundational doctrines we are to follow go, are not ambiguous or obscure. Nor are they fluid and subject to change as time progresses. But in this day we have two very polluted ‘mainstreams’ of Christian thought (fundamental and progressive) at work to lead us astray from those standards!

The Fundamentalist Evolution

The fundamentalists have, over the years, allowed the true teachings of the Scriptures to be obfuscated (or completely replaced) by the teachings of man. What is taught in most fundamental churches bears little resemblance to what the Apostles taught; or even was taught in generations gone by. As the moral compass of the religious landscape has devolved, the teachings of those who claim to hold to biblical doctrine have likewise gone through a metamorphosis to keep pace with this decay!

We can clearly see this if we step back and examine what was considered fundamental biblical truth 100 years ago compared with what is presented as such today. Where did all the preaching go on the evils of promiscuity, or a lack of sobriety, or on the sin of disregarding the marriage covenant as an ‘unto death’ commitment? Or on the many other ‘sins of the flesh’?

Why would most churches, even fifty years ago, gladly allow drunks, harlots and whore-mongers, and those who had divorced and remarried to attend their assemblies but forbid them membership to the congregation? Because they were legalistic or unenlightened? NO! Because they were more in sync with the will of God than we are today. They were lifting up fundamental biblical standards that we have fallen away from today. Standards that we need to return to!

The Deluded Progressives

And the progressives today are even worse! They are not only failing to lift up the former standards, they are claiming those standards no longer apply to us! They are telling us that the teachings of the Apostles of the early Church are being superseded by ‘new revelation’ being received by today’s Apostles and Prophets!

The Western Church needs to wake up and realize the majority of the big name ‘progressive’ preachers and teachers today claiming to be hearing from God are actually listening to seducing spirits; and therefor they are propagating doctrines of devils! They are teaching a Gospel that is not the Gospel of the Bible!

And they actually admit it!

They say that what God is doing in this generation is a different gospel than that which the early Church preached. They say the original Gospel of Christ has been replaced by the Gospel of the Kingdom (Dominionism).

But this is NOT of God; it is a satanic replacement of the truth!

If you are feeding off the teachings of those associated with the New Apostolic Reformation, the Seven Mountains Mandate, the Elijah List, Dominionism, or the nonsense coming out of Redding California (Bethel) you are being LIED TO; and your understanding of what God is really up to in this day and age is being seriously perverted!

God has NOT lain aside the preaching of the Gospel of Christ (the message of the Cross) in favor of a ‘new mandate of Dominionism’ erroneously referred to as ‘the Gospel of the Kingdom’! The ‘Gospel of Christ’ and the ‘Gospel of the Kingdom’ are one and the same message! And that message has not changed nor has our mission!

What has changed is the progressive church has lost it’s way; and is now on the Road to Rome! The daughters of the Harlot are returning home to Mama in preparation for the Global Religion that will herd the masses into the arms of the Beast!

Biblical Assembly?

But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. 43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: Mark 10:42-43

Jesus flat out forbade a structure of hierarchy that presents a pyramiding of position and power among his followers! Yet nearly every single church you find in the West is modeled after this forbidden pattern! Why is this?

Because we have departed from the biblical pattern given us!

Few and far between are the fellowships in the western world that assemble in a biblical manner (Christ the Head – and the Body moving in subjection to the instructions of the Head). We have for so long been functioning according to a hierarchical (pyramid) pattern forbidden by Christ that we think it normal and biblical; but it is certainly not!

Though most think the biblical pattern is a pastor/clergy in lordship over a congregation, the true pattern is one of eldership (plural!) teaching, guiding, and supporting the growth of a flock whom ALL have a function in the meetings (whether it be verbal or merely supportive in some fashion; such as prayer, supplication, or even menial physical tasks).

The Holy Spirit is to be in control of what transpires in our assemblies, but how can he if the Body is not free to respond to the instruction of the Head? We need to seek to assemble according to the pattern given us by the Scriptures (the Body of Christ all moving in accord with the voice of the Spirit), and not shackled by the programs imposed upon us by man.

The concept of Clergy ruling over Laity did NOT come from God! It is a fruit of the Antichrist spirit at work through the pride of man.

As I have said before: Let’s leave the building of pyramids to those still in Egypt!

If we cannot see that a structure of hierarchy (pyramid) is a fruit of satanic pride at work in the flesh of man we might want to seek some divine enlightenment in this area. This unbiblical model stifles the function of the Body of Christ in our assemblies. People are not free to move at the direction of the Holy Spirit; nor do they come to the meetings with an expectation to be used by God. They come as spectators instead of functioning members of a living Body waiting on the moving of the Spirit to control and direct what transpires in the meetings. The work of Christ through his Body is replaced by the means and methods of man. A false light replacing the true Light!

I wonder if you who read these words might have other examples of how this false light replaces the true. If so, please feel free to detail them in a comment.

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. Micah 7:8

Let’s cry out to God for the grace and unction to return to the pattern of lifestyle, assembly, and ministry that is in accord with the Divine plan. Let’s not wait for the coming sifting to separate us from the ways of the world and from the ways of man’s religion.

Let’s do it now!

By the grace of God, and the power of his Spirit, we absolutely can ‘get it right’!

  1. Hi Paul,
I really look forward to all your newsletters and articles that you post. You are so clear and to the point and factual always backed up by the Bible on so many important things. You are one of the few people that I can believe in what they say anymore. There is so much deception out there now, and even many good people from the past are falling victim to the many deceptions of the last days. I do not want to be one of them.

I wanted to ask you if you are aware of what Rick Wiles has been saying this last month or so about the jewish people and Israel? It seems to me from listening to his videos that he has really been talking against them, and if I am understanding him correctly, he is saying that it is a misinterpretation of the Bible that Christians are to ‘back’ or stand with Israel and her people. And that we should NOT be standing with them! Are you familiar with what I am talking about? What is your opinion on this? .

I would really appreciate your opinion on this. If Rick is saying something this important that is not true, I want to know. And what he is saying just doesn’t sound quite right to me. And I sure don’t want to get this wrong.

Thank you Paul for your time in this. Thank you,

I have really been studying NAR and Bethel Church as Bethel has long fingers and it is finding its way into the church I am going to which more than concerns me. Your articles on this subject are very helpful also.
This is a very interesting blog I discovered on ‘When Bethel Invades Your Church’. The many, many comments when you scroll down are interesting to say the least. You might find it eye opening as I did. https://mkayla.wordpress.com/2010/05/18/when-bethel-invades-your-church/

How many times can I say thank you?!
This got much longer than I had planned, and I hope it makes sense.

    1. Hi Sandy;
Yes, I do think Rick Wiles has gone out to lunch on this Zionism issue; and John Little has got it right. I used to listen to Rick mainly for the guest speakers he would have on as they were bringing a lot of good stuff to the table, but due to the change in format of his show and his increasingly worrisome views (not just on Israel, but his Dominionist vision of conquering the religious broadcast market) I rarely listen to his show any more.

Sorry to hear the mixture from Bethel is invading your fellowship. It is not from the Father; and will seriously taint (if not completely destroy) whatever good is coming forth from your congregation. It must be spoken against at all costs.

But it is so hard to speak against mixture without sounding like you are rebuking the truth that the false is inserted into. Please seek wisdom and guidance in this area as it is possible to add to the damage by confusing the undiscerning who don’t understand that the bad is merged in with the good; and you are not speaking against the good.

Thanks for the link to Makala’s site. I have followed her work for years. A great testimony as to God’s ability to deliver us from error. I do feel she still needs to work some things ahead (don’t we all?) concerning the rapture and eternal security so please bear that in mind when using that resource and the associated links.

    1. Hi Steve;
I have found that more often than not good fellowship and ministry will be found in a home-group or cell church setting rather than a conventional church building or organization (but there are some churches out there who do hold to a biblical pattern of assembly).

Maybe you could seek the Lord about the possibility of starting a home group yourself. I have found great edification in this manner in times past.

All in all, we can always fall back on the scripture: “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” What better fellowship and edification could be found than the presence of the Father?

      Blessings to you;
      Paul Benson

  2. As always Paul…you bring truth in a powerful and clear way!

This to me is one of the most important subjects of our time, if we don’t get this right, if we can’t discern the true light of God…well frankly the Body of Christ is in deep, deep trouble. I’m not suggesting I can always discern the truth in all things, but I do know I can find all I need in the word of God. We have passed a point of trusting what we’re told by others…We must dig deep into the word and find our own answers. The mere fact that one spends time in God’s word, the closer you will become to Him, the more understanding you will have and the better you will become in discerning light from darkness and truth from lies, not to mention, what God’s word really says. You will be equipped with the truth….We just need to spend time with Him.

May God Bless you for teaching the truth.
