Will Antichrist’s Dominion (And The Mark Of The Beast) Be Confined To The Middle East Or Be A Global Phenomenon?

Is there any truth to the claims many are making that the Mark of the Beast, and the great persecution of God’s elect in that day, will be confined to the Middle East?

        The World-Wide Beast System!

by Paul Benson

Once in a while (and more frequently lately) I either read an article or receive a comment to my site that promotes the notion that the Mark of the Beast and the dominion of Antichrist (and the resulting ‘tribulating’ of the followers of Jesus via Satan’s ‘war on the Saints’) will be merely a regional subjugation versus a global one. Many are teaching this all will be confined to the Arab nations of the Middle East and the rest of the world will not fall prey to Antichrist’s evil reign. But is this what the Scriptures teach us?

This idea of Antichrist’s dominion being restricted to the Middle East seems to primarily come from a vein of eschatology teaching that Antichrist will be a Muslim. Though there are quite a number of reasons I doubt that to be true, the possibility of a Muslim Antichrist is not the focus of this writing.

Let’s address the claim of many that the rule of Antichrist and the mark of the Beast will not be global in scope. Is there any validity to that claim? Absolute NOT! Let me prove it to you by what is plainly stated in the Scriptures. Jesus, speaking of the events of the last days and his subsequent Return to Earth, made this statement:

For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:35-36

Notice the words ‘the whole earth’ in this verse. The whole Earth is not comprised of merely the region known as the Middle East. To make such a claim would be folly.

Some would argue Jesus was specifically referring to his Return with the words ‘as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth’. But, firstly, we must grasp here that the ‘things that shall come to pass’ (which Jesus outlined earlier in this discourse) are certainly events fully detailed in the many prophesies of the Bible as impacting the entire planet.

And, secondly, as far as the usage here of the word ‘snare’ goes, we understand that a snare is something that either it ensnares you or you escape it. Notice it says ‘escape these things that shall come to pass‘. The ‘snare that shall come upon the whole earth’ that is to be to be escaped is ‘the things that shall come to pass’ – and these things are global events according to the Scriptures.

But now let’s narrow our focus and concentrate primarily upon Antichrist’s dominion. Do the Scriptures indicate that this aspect of the chaotic end-time events will be global as well? In Revelation 13 we see two beasts described. The first is Antichrist and his ‘beast system’. The second is the False Prophet who helps to enthrone and empower him.

The First Beast

And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea… …And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.  Revelation 13:1+7-9

In this description of the first Beast, which is commonly accepted to be a dual reference to both the ‘beast system’ and the ‘man of sin’ himself, it says pretty clearly ‘all (whose names are not in the Book) that dwell upon the Earth shall worship him’. How that could be construed to mean ‘just those in the Middle East under the control of an Islamic Antichrist’ is beyond me. But there are an increasing number of folks making that claim. Personally, I am NOT buying it! It does not line up with the full counsel of the Word of God.

Let’s see what it says about the power and dominion of the False Prophet (whom I believe will be seen by the deceived masses as the supreme ‘global religious head’.)

The Second Beast

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13  And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.  15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 16 And, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.  Revelation 13:11-18

Just like the description of the first beast, which says ‘ALL that dwell upon the Earth shall worship him’, this description of the second beast says he ’causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast’. Should we think the words ‘the Earth and them that dwell therein’ are given to point to a specific region of Earth, and not the world as a whole? I sure don’t get that from the text! Do you?

Should we read ‘he causeth all’ to receive a mark as ‘he causes some‘? Should we read ‘no man might buy or sell’ as ‘some of the men’ won’t be able to?

When we consider the entire chapter of Revelation 13 in context there is ZERO reason we should not deduce the dominion and oppressive dictates of Antichrist and the False Prophet as a globally encompassing system of control. You would have to deceptively alter word meanings and ignore specific descriptions to get any other conclusion. Seriously.

But sadly, some are choosing to do exactly that!

And when we consider the way electronic funds transfer has become the standard of commercial transaction, and also the ‘global connectivity’ of this system of EFT, how could just one region of this planet enforce a requirement to access that global monetary system which the rest of the populous will not affected by? Just adding in the concept of international travel should show to anyone with a little common sense that the notion of a ‘region specific’ Mark of the Beast is not workable in a real world environment! How could you possibly enforce it upon the locals but not those of other countries just visiting or in country on a work visa? NO WAY!

The wording of Revelation 13 should conclusively convince anyone that the system of the Beast will be a globally encompassing entity. However, if you need further proof we have some more here in the angels description of the Beast System of the last days as he answered Daniels questions about the visions which he had experienced.

I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. 16 I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. 17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. 19  Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; … … 23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.  Daniel 7:15-23

The angel said this beast will ‘devour the whole Earth‘ not just the Middle East! To me the words ‘shall devour the whole Earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces‘ are quite clearly speaking of oppression and destruction on a global scale!

If you can read this description of the final beast system and still see it as ‘region specific’ then there is probably not much point of any further efforts on my part to convince you otherwise. So I will not waste your time expounding upon the other passages that detail the cities of the earth being lain waste and the desolation left behind by Satan and his ‘man of sin’. Let’s just close with this one:

They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? Isaiah 14:16-17

In spite of what many are teaching today, the Beast System under the control of Antichrist and the False Prophet (and the oppression and persecution fostered by that evil system) will encompass and affect THE WHOLE EARTH!

Let’s get it right, shall we?

Blessings upon all who love our Christ;

Paul Benson

P.S. I mentioned in this article that I doubt that the Man of Sin will be promoting the Muslim religion as the way of truth. I just cannot see the entire planet converting to a religion that is so contrary all to other religions (this is why I believe the ‘Islamic Antichrist theory’ steers one toward a ‘Middle East only’ view on the Mark of the Beast). I believe the globally accepted form of religion the False Prophet will sit over must be an all-inclusive amalgam of the various religious practices around the globe. Or the world would not be sucked into it. IMHO

  1. Most talk about an antichrist in a singular form, like we are looking for; as many say, it will be a Pope, a President or a world leader that may be on earth now???? This will be a global event but we must keep in mind, “until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled”. Revelation 12 basically covers from before the birth of Christ up to the last 3 ½ years of tribulation.

Many believe the woman in chapter 12 is the Church, which adds to the rapture farce, but the dragon was in front of the woman to devour the man child before He was born. The Church did not birth Jesus Christ, Israel did. Genesis 37:9-10. The covenant with Abraham was confirmed before of God in Christ, and through faith we are of that seed, which is Christ. Galatians 3.

We can see in Revelation there are three, not just one. When Satan is cast down to earth with no more access to heaven, the angels in heaven rejoiced and said WOE unto the inhabitants of earth, this is also clear it is a global event. We also see in Revelation the two witnesses will be killed in Jerusalem “where also our Lord was crucified”. Revelation 11. I believe this time will engulf the entire earth, but Jerusalem will be involved and also the house of Israel because all the beast in prophecy has involved Israel.

This last beast will also but also the entire earth. To say what countries are involved or if these last three will appear in a mortal body or in their angelic bodies will be total speculation. As the fourth beast in the book of Daniel, the only one that new it was going to be before it rose up, was God, same as today. We can only tighten our belts of faith and be ready to stand fast and with the grace of God given us, we will not believe the lie that is coming to take the mark and not try to save this body, because it is appointed once to die.

May God bless us all and hold us tight.

  2. Whether the antichrist will be Muslim, I don’t know. But I do know that Islam is the very definition of antichrist-ian doctrine: the worst sin in Islam is to say that God has a Son (the worst in Christianity being to deny the Son).

    1. Hi Robert;
Yes, Islam is most certainly ‘antichrist’; but so is ANY religion (including the pseudo-christian ones) that teaches contrary to the truth of the Word of God.

One point I ponder but have never heard expounded upon is this: How could anyone who denies God has a Son claim to actually BE that coming Messiah/Son the O.T. promised and prophesied?

Psa_2:7  I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Heb_1:5  For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son.

Heb_5:5  So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

The ‘Antichrist’ is one who seeks to replace the true Christ. How could a false Messiah claim to be someone he denies even exists? Just sayin’…..

    2. I don’t know Paul, but I do know that even satan masquerades as an angel of light, even as he wars against God’s angels. God bless
